.
In preparation for my first post on my new blog (The Ridou Artist Report) I
started working on the first artist to be featured: Pierre Bonnard. It immediately
struck me that one of the other artists to be highlighted on the blog is almost
Bonnard's exact contemporary. She is the Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck. Not
only did they have concurrent lifetimes (Bonnard 1867-1947 and Schjerfbeck
1862-1946), but they're both admired for their self portraiture spanning their
lifetimes.
In the new post I'll be featuring individual artists, so I thought of showing these
dual self portraits from both artists painted at about the same time in this blog.
The first pairing is of Bonnard and Schjerfbeck self portraits painted when they
were both 22 years old (painted in 1889 and 1884-5 respectively).
The second pairing is of Bonnard and Schjerfbeck self portraits on paper, painted
(or finished, as was the case with HS) when they were 63 and 64 years old
(painted in 1930 and 1913-26 respectively).
The last pairing is of Bonnard and Schjerfbeck self portraits painted at the end of
their lives in 1945, when Bonnard was 78, and Schjerfbeck 83.
