Finnish Music Day

.

They have an annual event in Finland to coincide with Jean Sibelius's birthday
on the 8th of December: the Finnish Music Day.

Of course nowadays Finnish Music is a lot more than the towering Sibelius,
with world-renowned music education, conductors, soloists and singers
making their mark in global classical music.

A notable example, composer Kaija Saariaho:

However, there's no denying the continuing importance of
Jean Sibelius (1865- 1957) to the Finnish musical and historical life.
And of course not just for Finland, but for the global audience
as well: Our ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) just had their
annual classical music countdown on their ABC Classic radio channel,
this year about listeners' favourite 20th century classical music,
with some seven Sibelius works voted in (the top one was his
Finlandia suite at number 15).

Last year we were lucky to visit Ainola, the home of Sibelius,
in Järvenpää, Finland. I posted photos of the event, which can be
re-visited here:
