One of the young wood fired ceramic makers in my newly established wood fired pottery collection is Shawn O'Connor from Maine, U.S.A. His is work of subtle and understated tones created by the effects of fire on clay pots positioned just right in the kiln to achieve these amazingly controlled beautiful shades of orange, brown, red, yellow, etc. Many of his peers go for the rough (dramatic fire effects and/or chiselled forms), but Shawn's work looks like as if it's all been carefully designed beforehand - I don't know how he does it; I do know it is far from easy!
He has an exhibition on at the Roswell Clay Collective till the 5th of February, 2011. Go and buy, you won't be disappointed!
