Day 5 - Kuhmo International Chamber Music Festival 2010

.

We rowed to 'our' island for some more blueberries for our breakfast, and
encountered these bear marks on the tree trunk. Later we found out that yes,
there are bears on this little island!

We got our blueberries anyway.

Fab! Marimekko, I guess.

We were surprised to find so many Fanflowers in Finland.
They are actually our native Australian plants (Scaevola).

Well, we BOTH enjoy our music!

Finnish Jopo and Jupiter bicycles, and Tomas Djupsjöbacka transporting his cello
(Sari Rusanen in the background). Unfortunately Tomas (from Meta4 String Quartet)
fell ill towards the end of festival, and had to leave the festival prematurely.

Family moments...

Elina Karjalainen - the former general manager of the festival.

I came here from Central Europe - and I don't mind waiting for my 'dad' during the concerts!

Ashley Wass, Pianist.

The UK artist Ashley Wass is regarded as one of that country's most interesting pianists. He has achieved success in
competitions including the Leeds Piano Competition and the London International Piano Competition. He was
chosen for the BBC's New Generation Artist programme and also the 2001 'Rising Stars' series at the Ravinia
Festival. Wass has playe in all the major concert halls in the UK, making his London Proms debut in August 2008.
He has also made several prize-winning recordings. He has appeared as soloist with orchestra with Vassily
Sinaisky conducting the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and with
the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Wass has played chamber music at the Marlboro Festival in the United States.
Future plans include several solo recitals around the world, three Proms concerts and appearances as soloist with
the London Sinfonietta.

Ashley Wass teaches at the Royal College of Music in London and has been Artistic Director of the Lincolnshire
International Chamber Music festival since 2007.

Martti Rousi, Cellist.

Winning the Turku Cello Competition and second prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition have
resulted in Finnish-born Martti Rousi appearing as soloist with several Finnish and foreign orchestras. His studies
in Turku began with Timo Hanhinen and Seppo Kimanen, and then he continued at the Sibelius Academy as a
pupil of Arto Noras. From 1985 to 1986 he gained a Fullbright scholarship to study under Janos Starker at Indiana
University in the USA. He also attended masterclasses given by Valter Despalj, Natalia Gutman and William Pleeth.

In addition to a career as a soloist Rousi has also dedicated his time to chamber music and has performed with his
trio partners pianist Peter Nagy and violinist Leonidas Kavakos and has given recitals with several pianists,
including Laura Mikkola, Olli Mustonen and Kathry Stott. From 1989 to 1992 Rousi was Artistic Director of the
Lemi-Lappeenranta Music Festival and in 1992 was invited to fill the same role at the Turku Music Festival. His
appointment ended on a high note: its 50th anniversary in August 2009. He was also Artistic Director of Sibafest.
Since 1995 he has held the post of Professor of Cello at the Sibelius Academy and continues to give masterclasses
all over Europe.

You shooting at me (or my Marimekko)?!!

Pekka Kuusisto has arrived in Kuhmo
(surrounded by admirers including Helga (in stripes)).

A Kuhmo mainstay: Alex from Australia/Hungary.

Composer Silvia Colasanti (before and after the performance of her piece)...

Kuhmo Church.

We missed the prime minister of Finland here by about half an hour.

Texting (each other?)...

Got to get to bed to manage yet another day of gorgeous music!
