In 1642 a Pietari Bjugg started his 14 year stint as the bishop in charge of Rautu, a
small village in Finnish Karelia, where my paternal family is from. Apparently he
was ordered on the 4th of July 1644 to make sure the heating in the local
rectories were to be of the highest standard (using enclosed heating sources as
opposed open smoky ones) and thus showing by example of how to ordinary
peasants can improve their living conditions. Furthermore, the use of glass
windows was encouraged.
The other piece for my collection of 1642s is a publication called
Discursus politicus de prudentia 18. Decembris 1641,
a doctoral thesis by a Michael Wexionius (Abo Academy, Turku, Finland).
Note that the academic language in Finland at the time was Latin.
