A few years ago we had this beautiful Eastern Water Dragon (Physignathus
lesueurii) living in our garden. It became quite tame, and accepted pieces of
banana from my hands. They hibernate in winter, and it was always such a thrill
to see him (we called him Oscar) show up early spring, looking skinny, but
otherwise as if nothing had happened for a few months, asking for his breakfast.
We know it was a male, because of his large size and his distinctive red belly
during mating season (the colour worked, a couple of times we see a baby
dragon sunbathing in the garden, but they never stayed for long):
Today, on my three hour Duckhole Trail walk, I was excited to come across a
couple of juvenile Eastern Water Dragons at McCarr's Creek. Amazing to think
that these kids will reach a length of some three feet in a few years' time.
